Microplastics 101: Dari Mana Datangnya dan Ke Mana Perginya?

  Banyak research on microplastics ni focus kat laut dan pantai. WHY?  Sebab studies claimed that marine environment ni as the final sink of microplastics. Senang story, semua microplastics akan end up dekat pantai, laut, dan mungkin terkubur dalam seafloor sediment. Tapi, dari mana semua microplastics ni datang? Takkan dari single-use plastic sahaja?  Period pads, contain layerssss of plastic, when we thought that it is made fully of cotton. Paper cups, bukan hanya made up of papers, it is lined with plastic  Teabags: Releases lots of microplastics when in touch with hot waters. Imagine drinking microplastic-flavored tea. Just like paper cups, soda cans are also lined with plastics to prevent corrosion. Tyres: Made from synthetic rubber (plastic) is one of the biggest contributor of microplastics.  Knowing this somehow blows my mind too (as a microplastic researcher)! Tiny Troubles: Microplastics Crisis!

Isu mikroplastik mula menjadi topik hangat belakangan ini terutamanya di Malaysia. MHI dan Buletin Utama TV3 baru je cover isu mikroplastik ni beberapa bulan lepas. Walhal, negara Asia yang lain seperti China, India, dan Jepun dah lama fokus akan krisis mikroplastik ni di saat rakyat Malaysia masih alpa akan kehadiran racun ini dalam organ mereka. Tapi, kenapa negara-negara Asia ni take serious on microplastics issue ni? Here's why:  Asian countries are listed as the top countries with mismanaged plastic waste, especially China. Malaysia pun listed antara top countries with mismanaged plastic wastes. Tapi tak sedar lagi.  Studies found the presence of microplastics in humans' organs and the health risks they imposed.
